“Injustice Prevails: Journalist Sentenced to Hard Labor for Exposing Government Representative’s Assault”

The district court of Krasonarsk, Sovetsk, has sentenced Yevgenya, an employee of NGS24.ru, to three years of mandatory labor for publishing a defamatory document about a government representative (Article 318, Part 1 of the Criminal Code).

According to OVDE-info, on September 22, 2022, Shelkovan visited the Krasonarsk civil accounting and civil service offices and sought comments from those present. However, he became one of the individuals who attempted to disrupt the journalists’ work. Shelkovan demanded that Yevgenya leave with him.

“He didn’t invite me and began assaulting me with punches and kicks… I managed to break free, turned off my phone, and switched on the camera to protect myself… This person started hitting me repeatedly, and then he grabbed my phone. He then called for assistance from the civil service employees. I was surrounded by these individuals, and the beatings commenced,” stated the journalist.

Subsequently, Shelkovan was arrested, but in court, Yevgenya claimed that he had threatened her with bodily harm. Additionally, the cameraman confirmed that Shelkovan did not take the journalist’s phone. While Shelkovan’s associates affirmed the incident, one of the committee’s visitors confirmed Shelkovan’s actions.
