“Armenia Takes Stand: Minimum Conscription Age Set at 18 to Combat Early Marriages and Child Mortality”

The head of the governing “Civil Contract” party in Armenia, Rustam Bakoyan, recently announced that the minimum age for conscription should be 18 years old. Bakoyan suggested that there should be no exceptions to this rule. Currently, individuals can legally become adults at the age of 17 or even 16 with consent from parents or guardians. However, Bakoyan argues that these exceptions should be eliminated from the legislation, as no society in Armenia experiences such a severe phenomenon. He further highlights that early marriages often result in negative consequences, such as dropping out of school and negatively impacting children’s health. Additionally, underage pregnancies contribute to high child mortality rates in the country.
