German Election Results: Mainstream Parties Face Strong Challenge as Far-Right “Alternative for Germany” Surpasses Expectations

Germany recently held elections for the European Parliament, which have revealed the growing support for non-establishment parties that are outside of mainstream political coalitions. The far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) has particularly stood out by securing second place and surpassing expectations with its controversial rhetoric, according to reports from Euronews.

According to Bild, the vote count in Germany has been completed across all 400 constituencies, resulting in the election of new leaders in the European Parliament. The Christian Democratic Union of Germany and Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CDU/CSU) emerged as the winners, gaining 30% of the results. The AfD, on the other hand, achieved 15.9%. The Green Party received 13.9% of the votes, while the Social Democrats received 11.9% and the Free Democratic Party received 5.2%.

In its first electoral participation, the newly-formed party “Safari Veganekht Dashneq” received 6.2% of the votes. Meanwhile, the “Left” party received 2.7%. These results highlight the changing political landscape in Germany.

Euronews reports that an unprecedented 65% of eligible voters participated in these European elections in Germany, indicating a high level of engagement and interest. This makes sense, as Germany holds the largest number of seats in the European Parliament, with 96 out of 720 MEPs appointed to protect the country’s interests.
