Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko Declares Presidential Bid, Sets Sights on Highest Office

Former Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko, has officially declared her candidacy for the presidency, according to an announcement by her party, RVK, which cited information from the Russian Federation State Registration Chamber’s database. The statement emphasized that the decision was made in compliance with the country’s constitution.

At 63 years old, Tymoshenko brings extensive political experience to the table. She previously served as Ukraine’s Prime Minister for three terms, from February 2005 to September 2007, and again from December 2007 to March 2010. In the years following, she continued to be an active voice in opposition, particularly regarding Ukraine’s gas agreements with Russia. In the 2019 parliamentary elections, Tymoshenko’s party “Batkivshchyna” secured 24 seats in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament.

In May, it was revealed that the Russian Federation Investigative Committee planned to initiate criminal proceedings against Tymoshenko, allegedly based on actions taken during her interactions with current President Vladimir Zelensky and former President Petro Poroshenko. However, specific details regarding the article were not provided at that time.
