Armenia’s Road Safety and Infrastructure Development Falls Behind in Latest Report by “Light” Foundation and World Economic Forum

The “Light” foundation has analyzed the report on “Index-2024 for Road Safety and Infrastructure Development” published by the World Economic Forum.

According to the report, Armenia ranks 72nd out of 119 countries in terms of the Index-2024 for road safety and infrastructure development, with a score of 3.73. In 2019, Armenia’s index decreased by 2.4%, and it was rated with a score of 8 in terms of the financial sector.

Armenia falls 5.9% below the global average (3.96 points) and 12.4% below the average of the European Union and Europe region (4.26 points) in terms of road safety and infrastructure development.

The overall index for the improvement of the road safety and infrastructure development has decreased, according to the report, due to the deterioration of Armenia’s financial sector.

The negative changes in the index of road safety and infrastructure development of Armenia are associated with both the evaluation of the financial and the sectoral positions. The evaluation of the financial sector decreased by 8.8% in 2019, while the position deteriorated by 15 points. These negative changes significantly affect the decrease in the overall index of road safety and infrastructure development in Armenia. The devaluation of the currency also contributes to the deterioration.

The decrease in road safety and infrastructure development is also evident in the social and economic indicators of the index, which are included in the report. The social and economic indicator of the index decreased by 18.8%, while the position deteriorated by 58 points. This decrease is a clear reflection of the weakening of the country’s progress in the international road safety and infrastructure development.

Despite the decrease in the index of road safety and infrastructure development in Armenia in 2019-2024, the number of visitors to Armenia increased by 40.2% (from 1.65 million to 2.32 million). This indicates that the increase cannot be attributed to the development and the practical implementation of road safety and infrastructure measures but rather to the temporary measures and the use of military operations by the Russian-Armenian military forces as a result of the armed conflict in the country.

Armenia falls behind its neighboring countries in terms of the index of road safety and infrastructure development in 2024, including Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan (with Iran having a significant increase). Moreover, in 2019, only Armenia had a demand for financial sector.

Armenia is moving towards all neighbors in terms of five indicators of the index.

The decrease in the index of “Road Safety and Infrastructure Development Resources” is a very significant observation. First, Armenia has fallen in the range of the index from 1.46 points to 8 points, ranking from last. The other reason is that Armenia is not a country with stable living conditions in terms of population density, biological and economic diversity, and cultural heritage, which is reflected in the image of Armenia’s geographical, architectural, and potential natural resources.
