Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan under fire for secret meeting with High Commissioner for Refugees

The human rights defender, Anahit Manasyan, from the Republic of Armenia, has come under criticism from journalists for agreeing to a meeting with Bagrat Srapanyan, the High Commissioner for Refugees. In response to this, Manasyan has stated that she is still willing to meet with him, even without the presence of journalists and with up to four other individuals. During a press conference on June 4, Artur Aslanyan, the secretary of MIP, announced this development.

It is worth noting that Holy Srapanyan, the leader of the “Tavush’s father’s journey,” is currently positioned near the MIP building with participants of the march. Srapanyan explained that they visited the office of the Human Rights Defender in order to seek answers to their questions and inquire whether MIP had violated human rights or if there were any other concerns.

Later, Srapanyan emphasized the importance of having several media outlets present during the meeting to ensure transparency. He stated that if there are no journalists in attendance, the meeting will not take place.

“My experience has taught me that what is not recorded is often considered non-existent. The location of the meetings also reveals the attitude. We need journalists present to avoid situations where it becomes a matter of ‘he said, she said.’ MIP claims to be an open and transparent organization, so why should journalists not be allowed in? We are not implying that Manasyan should be present here, but as the protector of the people, she should listen to their voices,” expressed Srapanyan.

He further asserted their belief that MIP has a specific reason for denying Anahit Manasyan access to their office and refusing journalists as witnesses.
