“Pioneering German researchers unveil breakthrough material revolutionizing construction: PMMM offers game-changing thermal insulation, transparency, and energy efficiency”

The researchers at the Institute of Microstructure Technology in Germany have developed a new type of material called PMMM (Polymer-based Microphotonic Multifunctional Metamaterial). This material solves construction problems, particularly in building insulation for floors, roofs, and walls. The key to this material lies in its invisible microstructures, which are about 10 microns wide and act as functional elements. One advantage of PMMM is its high thermal insulation properties, blocking up to 73% of the sun’s radiation. Additionally, PMMM is highly transparent, allowing up to 95% of visible light to pass through, and it can also regulate heat distribution by absorbing excess heat.

A noteworthy feature of this new material is its self-cleaning property due to its hydrophobic surface, making it easy to clean and maintain. Overall, PMMM offers a promising solution to improve the thermal insulation, transparency, and energy efficiency of structures while providing enhanced protection and comfort.
