Swedish Embassy in Iran Temporarily Closed Amidst Disturbances: Ambassadors Call Attention to Demonstrations

During the temporary closure of the Swedish embassy, the Swedish ambassador to Iran and Swedish authorities brought attention to the disturbances caused by the demonstrations outside the embassy in Tehran. The Iranian Foreign Ministry was notified of these events, according to Mehr, an Iranian media outlet. They stated that the closure was a result of disrespectful and provocative demonstrations by Swedish authorities in Tehran, as declared by the Iranian government. Additionally, during a meeting with the Swedish diplomat, concerns were raised about the negative and distorted information being spread by certain media outlets regarding security and construction activities in Iran. The announcement further emphasized the expectation for the Swedish authorities to exercise caution when disseminating information about the demonstrations.

Reuters previously reported that the Swedish Security Service (SAPO) had received information about Iran’s use of terrorist networks in Sweden to carry out actions against other nations, groups, and individuals. While primarily targeting Iranian opposition groups and activists, these actions have also affected representatives of other countries, including Israel, according to SAPO. The announcement from SAPO highlighted that Iranian intelligence and military operators could potentially conduct activities in Sweden to further their intelligence-related objectives and engage in hostile operations.
