“Renovation of Water Pipeline Begins in Karakop Village Amidst Dangerous Conditions: Governor Assures Residents Help is on the Way”

The governor of the community announced today that workers have begun construction on the water pipeline renovation at the Vellia water plant. Currently, the electricity supply is still dangerous, so the first priority is to clean up debris before inspecting the new conduits. Mrs. Andreyasyan, a resident of the Karakop village, informed NEWS.am that the governor of the Alaverdi community, Mr. Davit Ghoumashyan, is in the village updating residents on the ongoing works.

Mrs. Andreyasyan stated that the villagers of Karakop, along with employees of the AIN (Armenian International News) company, have joined together to clean the streets, houses, and cellars of debris. The village municipality is providing food and water, but there is currently no gas supply. The residents have expressed concerns about their inability to go to work and pay their loans due to the situation. However, Davit Ghoumashyan has assured them that measures will be taken and the works will resume soon.

Earlier reports indicated that AIN employees are constructing a temporary bridge on the Debed River, connecting Karakop with the main village of Alaverdi for necessary transportation. It was also reported that AIN employees were delivering construction materials to Debed village by passing through the Debed River, which connects the Vanadzor-Alaverdi-Ayrum-Bagratashen highway. Drivers were instructed to use the Vrastan border crossing to Georgia for this route as the M-6 highway has been closed due to the event.

Yesterday evening, on May 26, a landslide occurred in the Lori and Tavush regions of Armenia, causing the Debed River to rise. As a result, roads, bridges, houses, and vehicles were flooded, and people were washed away. This flooding disrupted water supply for 16 communities, but it has already been restored. Unfortunately, there have been 4 casualties. The M-6 highway, which was closed for bilateral traffic, has partially been restored. The water level on Debed River rose to 6 meters yesterday. The damage to the Ayrum-Arjish-Noyemberyan 530 mm-thick water pipe left 16 communities without water, but it has been repaired. The flooding also cut off the M-6 highway connecting Dilijan to Gyumri.
