“Armenia Faces Unprecedented Wave of Protests Amidst Social Injustice and Violent Clashes”

In recent days, there have been numerous protests against social injustice and unfair distribution of benefits, as well as dissatisfaction and grievances regarding the government’s handling of the rule of law. The RA Citizen’s Assembly made this announcement, highlighting the violation of public authority and human rights in Armenia.

Previously, the RA Police, the Green Chamber of the RA, and a group of environmentalists, including the Chairman of the Green Chamber of Armenia, Arthur Simonian, Head of the RA Police, and the Deputy Chief of Police, faced a violent clash with protestors during an operation. This resulted in unprecedented violence and triggered a new wave of protests.

Furthermore, during the visit of N.S.O.T.T. Catholicos Garegin II and members of the Spiritual Council from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, Nicholas Pashinyan and his security guards, who are responsible for national security and public order, were physically assaulted and threatened. This incident raises concerns not only for the religious community and the church but for the entire Armenian society.

Although the violent acts of the protestors cannot be justified, they should be condemned. It is crucial that all parties involved in this chaotic situation, including law enforcement agencies, understand that violence should not be tolerated. The law should hold all criminals accountable for their actions. We urge the continuation of the struggle for the survival of the Armenian nation, based on love, peace, and respect, without resorting to violence, and with the spiritual support of the clergy.

Our collective aspiration for a free, independent, strong, and democratic government is unwavering.

Statement by the RA Citizen’s Assembly, May 29, 2024.
