Alaverdi Residents Brave Flood Disaster Alone: “We Don’t Want Help, We’ll Rebuild Ourselves”

Alaverdi residents Vahram and Zaruhie, in an interview with NEWS.am, expressed their determination to clean up their flooded house on their own. Due to the flood, their building’s entrance has been closed, but their relatives have been helping them wash the flooded entrance with hoses so that they can enter and exit. Zaruhie shared that they had raised the floor with wooden planks and that they were the only ones left in the building with their belongings. She mentioned that nobody has come forward to offer assistance, but they plan to repair the roof, paint, and bring a new carpet themselves. “We can’t rely on anyone else, we need technology to clean up,” added Zaruhie’s daughter, Vahram, highlighting the need for technical equipment.

It is worth noting that heavy rainfall on May 26 caused the Debed River to overflow in Lori and Tavush provinces. The resulting floods led to road closures, trapped individuals, and significant damage to infrastructure. The M-6 interstate highway was closed for approximately 16 hours, resulting in four casualties. The Road Department of Armenia has announced the closure of the Vanadzor-Alaverdi-Ayrum-Bagratashen highway (M-6), recommending drivers to use alternative routes such as the M-3 or M-1. Additionally, the section of the M-4 road from Dilijan to Ijevan is temporarily closed for trucks.
