“Armenian Republic Day: Commemorating the Historic Revival of Statehood and Victorious Battle against Turkish Invaders”

The Armenian people celebrate Republic Day of Armenia on May 28. This day commemorates the revival of Armenian national statehood in 1918, after years of suppression. The Armenian volunteer forces and regular troops achieved victory over Turkish invaders in the cities of Karakilisa, Bash-Aparan, and Sardarapat, halting their advance and defending the desire of the Armenian nation to liberate their homeland.

The victory in May allowed the Armenian people to overcome the violence they had endured in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Peace agreements were signed, with the final agreement being reached on May 26. On May 28, the Armenian national council officially declared the independence of the Republic of Armenia.

The first Republic of Armenia existed for only two years, from 1918 to 1920, before falling under Bolshevik rule. However, since Armenia regained independence in 1992, May 28 has been celebrated as the Day of the First Republic.

A memorial complex was built in Sardarapat from 1968 to 1978 to honor the heroic battle fought against the Turkish invaders from May 22-28, 1918. The complex features the monument “Zangezur,” a 35-meter-high structure that represents the spirit of the heroic decade. It showcases battle scenes and embodies the victorious spirit of the Armenian people.

These celebrations hold significant importance for Armenians as they commemorate a pivotal moment in their history and the achievements of their ancestors in defending their homeland.
