“Residents Displaced as Flooding Submerges Akhtala Building: Governor Reports No Casualties”

The sections of the building in Akhtala where residents have gone underwater are flooded, according to the governor of the community, Sevak Sargsyan. He informed NEWS.am about the situation, stating that the water has not receded yet. Currently, the residents whose houses have been flooded are displaced. One particular two-story residential building, where two families lived, is completely underwater and has been evacuated. Fortunately, there have been no casualties or injuries reported. Sargsyan also mentioned that approximately 15 residents have been displaced due to the flooding.

According to Sargsyan, people became aware of the rising water levels and were able to evacuate with the help of only 2-3 trucks. Unfortunately, two cars remained submerged along with the houses. The flooding has also caused significant damage to the railway, bridges, and roads in the area. Sargsyan stated that the electricity supply in Akhtala has been severely affected, with the power going out due to landslides. It is currently impossible to reach or access the area via the Akhtala crater or the river. He further emphasized that the situation is extremely challenging, and travel through the river is not an option.

Earlier reports revealed that the overflow of torrential streams in the Lori and Tavush regions of Armenia has resulted in the flooding of roads, houses, and cars. People have been trapped and roads have been closed as a result. The M-6 interstate highway had to be shut down due to the flooding of the Debed River. The water level of the Debed River has risen by 6 meters, and the 530 mm torrential stream of the “Alaverdi-Arjish-November” area has also experienced a rise in water levels, leading to disruptions in the water supply for 16 communities. So far, 20 people have been rescued from the floods, with 3 in Dilijan and 17 in November communities. The rescuers managed to bring one elderly person to safety near Sanahin.
