“Destruction and Evacuations: NGN Provides Update on Attacks in Armenia’s Lori and Tavush Regions”

NGN has reported an update on the situation in the Lori and Tavush regions of Armenia following the attacks on the border with Azerbaijan on May 26. Rescue operations are currently underway by the NGN rescue service in response to the consequences of the attacks and hostilities. A total of 324 rescue workers are involved in these operations.

As a result of these operations, several settlements in the Lori and Tavush provinces have been evacuated, with a total of 269 people being relocated, including 120 in Lori and 42 in Tavush.

In the village of Agheti, there have been 3 casualties. The rescuers have recovered the body of an unidentified civilian near the Sanahin Monastery. Additionally, the body of Avak Avakyan, born in 1948, was found near the football field water disposal well in the vicinity of Ptghavan village, and the body of Saribek Balyan, born in 1985, was found near Shunuga village.

In the Tavush region, 2 bridges have been destroyed and 1 has been damaged. Furthermore, 3 residential houses have been destroyed, and 45 houses, 2 hotels, and 18 public and other significant objects have been flooded. The Tavush Regional Administration has provided 25 units of engineering technology, including 20 excavators and 5 bulldozers, for the construction work.

The Debed River flooding in the Lori Province has caused significant damage, resulting in the washing away of a 31 km section of the M-6 Vahagnadzor-Alaverdi highway and the destruction of a 50-meter section. This has also affected 7 bridges and 70 signs of significant importance. Some routes to residential areas in the Lori province have been flooded, affecting the residents or rendering them inaccessible. Rescuers are working in these areas to deliver necessary goods and supplies through river crossings, and the residents have been evacuated to other selected areas. The Sanahin Monastery has also been affected by the flooding caused by the river crossing.

The organizing committee of the highway operation service has redirected drivers to the M-3 Margara-Vanadzor-Tashir-RA boundaries and M-1 Yerevan-Gyumri-RA state border highways for crossing the Republic of Armenia and Georgia. The Vanadzor-Alaverdi-Ayrum-Bagrathen and Dilijan-Ijevan routes are closed due to the current situation.
