“Former Russian Military General Ivan Popov Arrested for Massive Embezzlement Scandal: Shockwaves Rock Military Council”

Former military general Ivan Popov has been arrested for large-scale embezzlement during his military career. The arrest came after Popov’s participation in the 58th session of the Russian Military Council. The Russian Ministry of Defense, as reported by Vedomosti, stated that Popov is being investigated for his involvement in corrupt financial transactions and arms sales. The information about Popov’s embezzlement was confirmed by the database of the 235th military court, established on May 17, 2024, to investigate corruption cases. However, the court’s records do not provide specific details about Popov’s involvement in the corruption.

According to the court’s ruling, Popov has been found guilty of embezzling significant funds, as stated in the 4th part of Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code. The investigation into Popov’s activities lasted for two months and is being overseen by the Military Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation.

General Ivan Popov served in the Russian armed forces from May 1956. He held various positions, including the commander of the 58th battalion of special military operations. Throughout his career, he led different divisions and formations and took part in special military operations. However, in 2023, he was removed from service due to issues related to “military service and support,” as stated in the official statement.

General Popov has not responded to the audio message that was widely circulated after it was published on his Telegram channel. The message was recorded by Major General Andrey Gurulev, the former commander of the Border Guards of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
