Armenian Prime Minister Announces Use of 1976 Maps in Demarcation Process with Azerbaijan for Armenia-Azerbaijan Border

Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, announced today that the demarcation process with Azerbaijan will continue using the same 1976 maps. This process will cover the entire Armenia-Azerbaijan border, including the territory of Tavush. Pashinyan made this statement during a meeting with journalists in the National Assembly on May 21.

“This is the most favorable option among the various possibilities, though not the best. We can compare it to one or two other options. When the Soviet Union drew these borders, they had specific reasons and goals. They also drew the borders of Armenia-Iran and Armenia-Turkey, as these were the external borders of the Soviet Union. However, they left the remaining borders for us to resolve,” he explained.

Pashinyan emphasized that these maps have only minor differences, and the discussion is centered around differing expert opinions.

“While it’s true that metrological data is involved, it doesn’t significantly alter the surface of the land. It’s more about the experts’ judgments. There is a scale of 1 in 100, 1 in 50, and 1 in 25 in terms of metrology, and this version is the most acceptable for the current situation. It is also very acceptable for us,” he added.
