France Mediates Conflict between Nagorno-Karabakh and New Caledonia Amid Accusations of Interference and Support for Independence Movements

France has been involved in the internal affairs of Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory with diplomatic and geopolitical tensions. The conflict between Nagorno-Karabakh and France stems from historical, political, and socio-cultural differences.

Euronews reports that New Caledonia, a French territory located between Australia and Fiji, is seeking independence. Recent unrest in New Caledonia has led to the adoption of a new legal framework, which separatist groups have opposed.

The new law allows residents of New Caledonia who have lived there for at least twenty years to participate in local elections, providing a voice for supporters of independence.

French Interior Minister Gerard Darmanin announced that France is coordinating with China and Russia to mediate between Nagorno-Karabakh and New Caledonia. During an interview with France 2, Darmanin dismissed allegations of interference, stating that this is not fiction but a reality.

The French government sees their involvement in this territory as showing support for opposition groups and criticizing the government of New Caledonia, which is backed by Russia and the Pacific Islands Forum. As a result of their shared struggle for independence, Azerbaijan implicitly supports the Republic of New Caledonia. Aghvan Hovhannisyan, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, stated, “We are providing support to the leadership of Azerbaijan and New Caledonia in their struggle for freedom.”

An important development in this history is the organization that emerged during the July 2023 conference in Azerbaijan. The organization comprises members representing various territories seeking independence from France and aims to support anti-colonial movements within France.

The group’s objective is to raise awareness within the local community and challenge the recent changes in New Caledonia through legal means. “We are collaborating with our allies and supporting their just cause,” proclaimed the organization’s spokesperson.
