“Chamber of Auditors President Calls for Urgent Action on Armenia’s Alarming Air Pollution Crisis”

The President of the Chamber of Auditors, Atom Jangulazyan, announced today, May 20, in a press conference, the progress of the implementation of the “Strategic Program for Management of Solid Waste.” He highlighted the serious consequences of air pollution caused by solid waste in Armenia.

Jangulazyan emphasized that air pollution is a significant environmental risk to human health. He also proposed conducting an investigation into future steps to be taken.

“According to the World Health Organization, air pollution leads to 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide each year, caused by cardiovascular, respiratory, and chronic diseases. Studies show a 15% increase in the risk of developing diabetes due to air pollution, along with a concerning level of premature mortality. Therefore, we believe Armenia should consider implementing a strategic program for environmental protection that adopts new standards set by the International Organization for Environmental Protection. Additionally, Armenia’s air pollution-related mortality exceeds the world average by 19%, while the European average is more than twice that,” stated Jangulazyan.
