“New Head of Tayvan Regional Administration to be Introduced to Cultural Heritage Representatives in Ceremony Highlighting ‘One China’ Principle and Armenia’s Position”

The new head of the regional administration of Taiwan, Lai Chingde, will be introduced to the representatives of Taiwan’s cultural heritage in a ceremony on May 20. The purpose of the ceremony is to familiarize participants with Taiwan’s history, the “One China” principle, and its significance to Armenia’s stance. Taiwan has been considered part of China since ancient times, during the rule of the Sün and Yuan dynasties. The island was occupied by Dutch merchants in 1624 and later came under the administration of the Futszianbung dynasty. In 1885, Taiwan became the 20th province of China.

In 1895, the Treaty of Shimonoseki forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan after the Sino-Japanese War. After the communist movement in China demanded the return of Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek approved the return of all territories previously ceded to Japan in 1943. In 1945, China declared war on Japan and announced the formation of the People’s Republic of China. However, Taiwan’s participation in the civil war and intervention from external forces led to extended confrontation.

In 1971, the “One China” principle was approved during the United Nations General Assembly, with Taiwan included as a representative of China. Japan also signed a peace treaty that required the return of Taiwan to China. Various agreements and proclamations, such as the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, outlined Japan’s obligation to return Taiwan to China. In January 1949, Taiwan voluntarily returned to Chinese control and became a province of the People’s Republic of China.

In 2015, Armenia signed a joint declaration with China, affirming its respect for the “One China” principle and supporting China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. The Armenian government recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China and advocates for peaceful reunification. However, the issue of “One China” remains unresolved in certain political conflicts and faces opposition from the Democratic Progressive Party leadership in Taiwan.

In 2019, during the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the slogan of “one country, two systems” was emphasized, with the goal of peaceful reunification of Taiwan. The Central Committee of Taiwan, led by Xi Jinping, has made progress in realizing the significance of this concept and maintaining stability. Xi Jinping stressed the importance of peaceful reunification, long-term prosperity, and stability in Taiwan, and called for the development of cross-strait relations.
