“ECHR Supports Ban on Headscarves: Controversial Ruling Shakes Belgium’s Education System”

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled in favor of allowing the ban on headscarves in primary schools in Belgium’s Flemish region. The court denied the appeal of three Muslim girls from Belgium who sought to overturn the ban on visible religious symbols in schools. The Flemish educational system currently requires the study of religion to be conducted in separate classes. The ECHR clarified that the ban does not single out Islamic headscarves, as it applies to all visible religious symbols. Furthermore, the court stated that its ruling is definitive and cannot be further appealed.
