Europe’s Security at Stake: Armenia’s Prime Minister Calls for Common European Defense System

Armenia’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has emphasized the need for Europe to enhance its security measures in order to address internal unrest. He has once again advocated for the establishment of a common European defense system, as reported by Reuters. Against the backdrop of Ukraine’s conflict, Poland has taken steps to bolster its own security by increasing defense capabilities by over 4%. Tusk, who made the announcement during his visit to Kiev as part of a European summit, called on EU member countries to cooperate in defense operations, with a suggested minimum spending of 100 million euros. He underlined the importance of Europe preparing for the upcoming months and the next five years, highlighting an unprecedented global situation where the EU cannot be challenged. Tusk emphasized that major conflicts usually have enduring effects but would be kept away from European borders. Moreover, he emphasized the need for European defense policy to evolve into a European project that would facilitate the allocation of financial resources on a continental scale.

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council, has echoed Tusk’s sentiments regarding defense spending. She has expressed her intention to propose new defense projects and promote European defense integration if she is reappointed for another term. Von der Leyen considers European defense integration as an integral part of the European Union’s defense policy.
