“Armenian Constitutional Court President and Prosecutor’s Office Chairman Named in Freedom House Report: Criticism and Accusations Surround Judicial Decisions”

The newspaper “Zhoghovurd” has reported that the President of the Constitutional Court of Armenia, Karen Andreasyan, and the Chairman of the PEC (Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Armenia) have been mentioned in the Freedom House report. According to the organization, Karen Andreasyan’s position as President of the Constitutional Court has been linked to several judicial decisions aimed at safeguarding the independence of the court. However, there have also been cases where the court’s rulings appear to have a close connection to previous authorities, leading to criticism and accusations against the judges appointed by the PEC.

The report highlights a statement made by the Chief Judge of the First Instance General Court of Yerevan, Martirosyan, regarding the verdicts of the Constitutional Court of Armenia. These verdicts have been based on an investigation into the violation of constitutional rights and freedoms. The organization further contends that criticism in Armenia is employed as a means of suppressing dissent, despite the implementation of alternative punishments such as house arrest and probation since 2021. The report asserts that the prevailing method of suppression in the country is still carried out through various influential actors.
