USCIRF Urges Government to Fund International Organization to Promote Religious Freedom in Conflict Zones and Republic of Artsakh; Highlights Azerbaijan’s Violations Continues

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has released its annual report for 2024, which offers suggestions for promoting religious freedom in conflict-affected areas and the Republic of Artsakh. One recommendation is for the government to provide financial support to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in carrying out its activities in this regard. The report also emphasizes the need for protecting and preserving sacred sites and religious and cultural objects. Additionally, the USCIRF urges the United States government to consider adding countries that violate religious freedom, as defined in the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA), to the list of “countries of particular concern,” including Azerbaijan.

The report specifically highlights the systematic and widespread violations of religious freedom perpetrated by the government of Azerbaijan in the occupied territories of the Republic of Artsakh and areas under its control. It also brings attention to a statement made by Archbishop Mubariz Gurbanlı, the President of the Ecclesiastical Council of the Armenian Apostolic Church, who baselessly accused Armenian spiritual leaders of conspiring with a religious object at the Dadivank Monastery and called for their departure from the site.
