“ECHR Grants Italy Victory in Battle for Ancient Bronze Statue: Getty Museum Ordered to Repatriate Artifact”

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that Italy has the right to claim an ancient bronze statue that was discovered in the Adriatic Sea in the 1960s and is currently housed in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The statue, which depicts a young athlete, was brought to the museum in 1977 after the Getty Museum acquired it. Italy has been trying to repatriate the statue since it was sold to an unidentified German buyer for $3.9 million. The Getty Museum had appealed to the Strasbourg court, but Italy’s highest tribunal upheld the country’s request for the artifact’s repatriation. Italian courts have previously ruled against the Getty Museum in a similar case in 2007. The museum was founded by John Paul Getty and is supported by a billion-dollar art foundation.
