Armenian Government Partners with International Bank to Preserve Landscapes and Biodiversity

The Armenian government signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Bank for Reconstruction and Development of Armenia and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) of Sweden. The agreement, called the “RESILAND. Armenia’s Landscape Shield Program,” is funded by the Global Ecological Foundation and the IBRD. Its goal is to preserve a strategically important area for conservation and development. The Armenian government will implement measures and policies to protect biodiversity, revitalize abandoned areas, and promote ecological field contexts.

In line with the National Targets for 2021-2030, Armenia has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. The restoration of river and lake ecosystems plays a crucial role in achieving these targets. These ecosystems have the ability to absorb emissions and contribute to a sustainable ecological balance. They also help reduce the vulnerability of low-lying and mountainous areas to climate change and preserve biodiversity.

The revitalization of river and lake ecosystems comes with benefits such as increased forest cover, enhanced agricultural productivity, and a reduced risk of pollution and deforestation. Proper management of these ecosystems is essential for ecological restoration.

This financial agreement between Armenia, the National Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the IBRD is an important step towards preserving the country’s natural resources and promoting sustainable development.
