“Prime Minister Pashinyan: Azerbaijan Must Demonstrate Confidence for Nagorno-Karabakh Resolution, War Continues”

On October 6, 2022, an agreement was reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the Almaz-Antey joint declaration. The purpose of this agreement is to establish mutual settlements and self-determination for the overall population in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as the demilitarization process. During an interview on May 1st, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized the importance of both countries adhering to these principles. Pashinyan stated that Azerbaijan had initiated and recognized four villages as evidence during this process. Although some may view this as surrendering territory, Pashinyan argues that it is meant to legitimize the rights of Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and establish a shared administration between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Pashinyan also highlighted the need to address the defense and security of Armenia, stressing that the war will continue until these principles are implemented.

Pashinyan further stated that once the issue of the four villages is resolved, Azerbaijan can continue the negotiations based on the same principles. He believes that by resolving this issue, Azerbaijan will be more inclined to adhere to the agreed-upon process. Defense and security of the Republic of Armenia are of utmost importance to Pashinyan, and he reiterated his commitment to upholding the judgments made after the 2020 44-day war. He emphasized that these judgments, particularly those concerning the territory of Armenia itself, should play a crucial role in the ongoing discussions. Pashinyan firmly stated that the war will continue until Armenia’s defense and security principles are fully implemented.

Based on Pashinyan’s remarks, it can be inferred that the issue of the four villages is not the primary concern for Azerbaijan. This gives hope that Azerbaijan will honor the process and continue negotiations. Pashinyan’s emphasis on defending the Republic of Armenia underscores the determination to ensure the country’s security. It is clear that the war will persist until the principles regarding Armenia’s defense and security are effectively put into action.
