Attempted Assassin of Uzbekistan’s President Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison: Citizen Found Guilty of Terrorism Plot

Nemanghan city court has sentenced a 27-year-old resident of Nemanghan to five years in prison for attempted assassination and terrorism against Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the president of Uzbekistan. According to Gazeta.uz, the court found the citizen, identified as D.T., guilty of attempting to assassinate Mirziyoyev and conspiring to engage in armed actions or terrorism. D.T. was arrested on December 4, 2023, upon his return from Iran and has been charged with the 3rd part of the 158th article of the Criminal Code. This article pertains to the assassination or attempted assassination of the President of Uzbekistan using explosives, firearms, telecommunication networks, or the Internet. Additionally, D.T. has been charged with the 2nd part “b” of the 223rd article of the Criminal Code for unlawful entry into Uzbekistan by assisting foreign agents. The potential sentence for the first article is up to 3 years in prison or limited freedom for 2-5 years, while the second article carries a potential prison term of up to 5-10 years.

It has been reported that the suspect was identified in Iran in September 2016 without the necessary documents. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that D.T. had posted terrorist comments on Facebook, accusing Shavkat Mirziyoyev of betraying the victory of Moscow. The suspect had participated in the Victory Parade on May 9, 2023, and had uploaded an image of the president with a crosshair, indicating that he was being targeted. However, D.T. asserted during the court session that he was not a member of any religious organization.
