“CP Judge Selection Raises Questions: Brother of Parliamentary Committee Chairman Among Controversial Picks”

Jogovurd newspaper reports that today the CP will meet with the judge of the Constitutional Court, Sassoun Khachatryan, along with David Khachatryan. Both individuals are supportive of the CP judge’s verdict and stand behind the government’s decision wholeheartedly.

On March 29, the General Assembly of Judges selected David Khachatryan as the judge of the Constitutional Court following careful deliberation. Out of the 260 participating judges, 126 voted in favor of Arsen Nikoghosyan, while 131 voted in favor of David Khachatryan.

It is worth mentioning that David Khachatryan was a BDCH member for only a few months before being chosen as a judge of the criminal court of the court of appeal. He had significant conflicts with BDCH President Karen Andreyasyan. Now, he will officially become a judge of the Constitutional Court. On February 2, the CP judge election order had invited another judge, and Khachatryan had already put forth his candidacy. However, the judges selected David Balaian instead, a judge of the criminal court of the Yerevan General Jurisdiction Court. The CP judge was not appointed at that time due to the CP “Civic Contract” group’s non-participation in the deliberations, as it is part of the coalition government based on the “City Partnership Agreement”. Although there is uncertainty regarding the changes that may occur with David Khachatryan’s election to the CP, given that he was already chosen as a judge of the criminal court of the Court of Appeal by the CP, it can be assumed that he aspires to achieve greater ambitions within the CP.

Furthermore, David Khachatryan is the brother of Sassoun Khachatryan, the chairman of the parliamentary committee. This further complicates the situation as it raises concerns about Sassoun Khachatryan’s authority. It remains crucial not to undermine his authority.
