Russian Defense Minister Dismissed Amid Corruption Allegations, Faces International Sanctions

The Russian Minister of Defense, Timur Ivanov, has been dismissed from his position due to allegations of corruption. The Judiciary Committee has confirmed his dismissal under Chapter 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. However, no further details regarding the circumstances of his dismissal or the specific allegations of corruption have been made available at this time.

Ivanov had held the position of Minister of Defense since May 23, 2016. Prior to that, in 2012, he served as the governor of the Moscow region. From 2013 to 2016, he headed the company “Oboronstroy,” which is involved in the construction of housing for military personnel.

During his time as Minister of Defense, Ivanov was responsible for residential issues, as well as the reconstruction and development of military infrastructure and hydropower. He was involved in the construction of the Armed Forces’ training center and the “Patriot” park, stating that over two billion rubles had been collected for the project.

In light of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the outbreak of hostilities, Ivanov was sanctioned by the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, Canada, and New Zealand for supporting Russia’s actions in Crimea. It is worth noting that despite these sanctions, Ivanov personally visited London and his wife, Svetlana Ivanova, reportedly lived in one of Paris’ most luxurious hotels.
