“President of Armenia to Celebrate Adoption of Judiciary Law Amid Controversy and Protests”

The President of Armenia, Salome Zurabishvili, announced in the city of Tbilisi that she will be celebrating the adoption of the law on the status of professional judges in March 2023. The celebration will include representatives from the judiciary who have been acquitted for nine years. The President’s staff confirmed this news. On April 12, the Tbilisi City Court found Grigoriadis guilty of hooliganism during last year’s protests. Grigoriadis had thrown a molotov cocktail and damaged a police car. He was sentenced to nine years in prison. However, on the same day, President Zurabishvili announced in an interview with Pirveli TV that she had decided to pardon Grigoriadis. She acknowledged the guilt of her subordinates but did not find evidence linking Grigoriadis to the unacceptable actions.

In March 7 and 8, thousands of protests took place in Tbilisi following the court’s decision on the participation of foreign judges. The protests, which lasted until late at night, saw the police using water cannons and tear gas. In response to the protests, the “Armenian Awakening-National Salvation of Armenia” party announced a rally. As a result, on March 10, the authorities decided to suspend the ongoing process.
