“Villagers in Nagorno-Karabakh flee to Azerbaijan for fear of losing their land, says report; US citizen governor’s absence raises questions”

The “Hraparak” newspaper reports that villagers in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Tavush Province, who are affected by the ongoing hostilities, have decided to flee to Azerbaijan to avoid losing their land. This information was confirmed by Arsen Aghababyan, a US citizen and member of the “Living Land” party, who is also the Governor of Tavush province. Ashot Aghababyan, a writer and journalist and brother of Arsen Aghababyan, stated in an interview that his brother went to the US on April 16 for two weeks. He left because of the socio-economic program for Nagorno-Karabakh’s development and had meetings with Glendale’s mayor, the consulate, and the Armenian community leader. Ashot Aghababyan also addressed the possibility of his brother returning soon, considering the dire situation in their community, but he could not confirm anything. In Arsen Aghababyan’s absence, Garenik Danielyan, a member of the “Armenia” faction of the Artsakh Liberation War, is overseeing the governor’s office and will make an official statement in due course. Despite their relationship, Danielyan criticized Arsen Aghababyan’s decision, accusing him of selling his land. Many people are puzzled by his choice to go to the US. Mesrop Arkelyan, a member of the “Living Land” party, explained that Aghababyan went to the US to wait for the situation in Tavush to stabilize and to reassess the circumstances.
