“Great Britain Steps Up to Fight Deepfake Crime: New Law Defines Technology as Criminal Offense”

Great Britain is taking steps to address the issue of deepfake technology by proposing a new law that would make it a criminal offense. The severity of the penalty would depend on the extent to which the fake content has been spread. Offenders could face probation or more significant consequences, depending on the case.

The announcement was made by Laura Harris, the Minister of Justice, who referred to the Kereoren Document as evidence of the widespread use of facial recognition technology. In recent years, deepfake technology has become popular worldwide, with realistic-looking images being viewed by millions online every month.

The creators of this technology often have little understanding of its potential consequences, which is concerning. The proposed legislation also includes provisions to protect privacy by deeming the creation and sharing of explicit images without consent as a violation, and seeks to mandate the use of recording devices to prevent such instances.
