“Authorized Representative of Coalition ‘Civic Contract’ Denies Need for Democracy Assessment in Armenia, Calls for Concrete Examples”

The problem of entering society is not something that can be accomplished overnight. It requires time and effort to navigate that path, and inevitably, there will be consequences along the way. In a recent interview with NEWS.am, Hovik Aghazaryan, the authorized representative of the coalition “Civic Contract,” discussed the importance of the international organization, Freedom House, in assessing the state of democracy in Armenia.

However, Aghazaryan disagreed with the notion that there was a need to evaluate Armenia’s democracy. He argued that there is no legal obligation for them to listen to Freedom House’s assessment. While admitting that he is not a technological expert, he stated that he personally does not see any issues. He also suggested that similar concerns might exist in other countries but are not readily apparent to the average citizen.

Responding to allegations that Freedom House had influenced the resignation of the head of the Alaverdi community, Aghazaryan expressed his skepticism. He stated that he didn’t believe the situation in Armenia was such that anyone could be forced into something against their will. He acknowledged that there were internal disagreements and differing opinions, but emphasized that conflicts had been resolved through dialogue and not through authoritarian measures.

Aghazaryan further emphasized that Armenia has established democracy and worked towards resolving conflicts based on mutual agreement. He saw no indication of an authoritarian regime and refuted the claim that someone could be coerced into action against their own will.
