Armenia Fights to Protect Environment Amid Ongoing Conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh: Joint International Legal Committee Discusses Preservation Efforts

In recent years, the ongoing military conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region has raised serious concerns regarding security and environmental preservation.

During the first session of the Joint International Legal Committee between Armenia and Azerbaijan, held within the framework of the Bern Convention on the Protection of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, Eghishe Kirakosyan, representative of the Republic of Armenia, expressed Armenia’s concerns about the ecological and natural environment in the region and the safety of its civilian population.

The discussions took place in The Hague at the Arbitration Court of Arbitration.

According to Kirakosyan, the preservation and protection of the environment in the Nagorno-Karabakh region has become a pressing issue. Armenia has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to restore control over the flora and fauna and ensure the preservation of the ecological and natural environment, including the Sarsang reservoir and water resources. The mountainous regions of Karabakh, known for their rich biodiversity, are facing risks due to Azerbaijan’s military operations and infrastructure development, which aim to prevent the return of ethnic Armenians to their ancestral lands.

Armenia remains steadfast in its efforts to uphold its rights and protect its interests through the ongoing arbitration proceedings with Azerbaijan. It aims to advocate for its demands that align with the current phase of the peace process.

Notably, the first session of the Joint International Legal Committee between Armenia and Azerbaijan, within the framework of the Bern Convention on the Protection of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, took place in Berne on April 12, 2024.
