“Lebanon Gears Up for Local Self-Government Elections: All Eyes on Mayoral and Council Positions”

The local self-government elections in Lebanon allow the elected representatives of the population to participate and have a say in the governance of their communities. These elected officials include mayors, members of community councils, and provincial councils. In total, there are around 190,000 registered positions of power within the local self-government bodies of the country.

The upcoming second phase of the elections is scheduled to occur in two weeks, specifically on April 21. During this phase, the focus will be on the election of municipal council members. It is expected that this election will gather at least 50% of the votes from the population.

Based on the polls published in the days leading up to the election, it is evident that the two largest political groups are actively involved in the campaign. Saad Hariri’s Future Movement, which governs central and European metropolises through the “City Coalition,” and the National Patriotic “Rights and Justice” Coalition, which has been in power since 2015, are the leading players.

In addition to the main groups, there are several other forces accompanying them, including the “Third Option” coalition and the Armenian “Right Side” coalition.

Saad Hariri’s Council of Ministers emerged victorious in the previous parliamentary elections held in October, adding to the anticipation surrounding this upcoming round of local self-government elections in Lebanon.
