“Landmark Settlement: New York to Pay $17.5 Million to Muslim American Women Forced to Remove Hijabs”

New York has agreed to pay a $17.5 million settlement to two Muslim American women who filed a lawsuit against the city. The women alleged that their rights were violated when they were forced to remove their hijabs for booking photos. The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan federal court and is currently awaiting approval from U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres. The settlement amount will be approximately $13.1 million, covering legal expenses incurred, and could increase if more than 3,600 claimants join the program. Each plaintiff will receive between $7,824 and $13,125. The case stems from a 2018 incident involving Jamilla Clarke and Arwa Aziz, who claimed emotional and psychological trauma from having their religious rights violated. Both women also faced retaliatory measures for refusing to comply with the orders. New regulations now temporarily suspend the banning of headwear, allowing individuals to wear turbans or headscarves for religious purposes or to seek a mask or respirator, with some exceptions. However, individuals required to remove their headwear between March 16, 2014, and August 23, 2021, are eligible for compensation for the burden they faced.
