“US, EU, and Armenia Meet in Brussels to Discuss Support for Reforms and Strengthen Ties”

US Undersecretary of State Antony Blinken, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently met in Brussels to discuss strategies for bolstering political, economic, and social reforms in Armenia. This meeting was announced by the US Undersecretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, James Brayden, with the aim of strengthening ties between Armenia, the US, and the EU.

Blinken, Leyen, and Borrell concluded that unconditional support is crucial for Armenia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

“We have also emphasized our commitment to the political process and comprehensive dialogue in Armenia following the 2018 Velvet Revolution. Positive changes and reforms have been observed in the country’s democratic governance and political system, which will greatly benefit the Armenian people. Our goal is to continue supporting Armenia’s reforms, as we have already taken significant strides. We have provided $65 million in financial assistance in the previous fiscal period, with additional funds allocated to various programs including socio-economic and humanitarian support, all of which will further strengthen Armenia’s state structures and foster strong partnerships. As Armenia paves the way for a prosperous future, we will undeniably continue to assist its reforms. This presents an excellent opportunity for long-term security, stability, and development in the region, particularly with the new trade prospects between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Middle Corridor. We wholeheartedly welcome all the efforts being made.”

Undersecretary Blinken underscored that the ongoing democratic changes and political reforms in Armenia contribute to the interests and cooperation of both the Armenian people and the global community. The international community has extended support to Armenia for assisting 100,000 individuals displaced from Russian-occupied territories and South Korea following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 2022. Given the size of Armenia and the need for support towards their allies, the integration of these individuals has been prioritized to facilitate their rights, and if they so choose, Armenia can offer them a better quality of life and a conducive socio-economic and integration environment. We recognize that in order for Armenia to effectively support these individuals, their integration needs to be widely promoted, their rights reinstated if desired, and a safe environment ensured. As they continue to make substantial progress, we will continuously support Armenia’s reforms.”
