“Controversial Election Decision in Turkey: Central Election Commission Recognizes Van’s Elected Mayor amidst Protests”

The Central Election Commission of Turkey has announced that it will recognize the elected mayor of Van, setting an example for other mayors. According to the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, the decision of the Central Election Commission has been protested by the pro-Kurdish HDP coalition. The commission’s recognition was given to the candidate from the ruling “Justice and Development” party, who received 27 percent of the votes, instead of the true winner of the elections, Abdullah Zeydan, who had the support of 55 percent of the voters. After a lengthy recount, the Central Election Commission in Turkey has finally confirmed the victory of the ruling party candidate for mayor.
