“Controversial Release of Judges Raises Concerns about External Influence in Armenian Judicial System”

Four judges have recently been granted a one-month leave from their work, as per their request. Lawyer Tigran Atanesyan took to his Facebook page to express his criticism of this decision, suggesting that the real motives behind the judges’ leave stem from external pressure. Atanesyan also noted that it is not common for the final participant in a case to also be a judge. Assuming these claims are accurate, it appears that these judges have opted not to fight for their positions but to pursue other activities and paths in life, which may ultimately be beneficial for them. The crux of the matter lies in the fact that the judicial system has become distorted, where a judge’s position has essentially become a stepping stone for their career advancement. In essence, it raises questions about whether the Judicial Code, various acts, and even the Constitution align with the bureaucratic interests of Yerevan City Hall. This ongoing narrative sheds light on the government’s fragmentation and prompts the recurrent query: why isn’t Armenia truly a Republic?
