“Zuzana Caputova Makes History as Slovakia’s First Female President, Defeating Rival in Tight Race”

In Slovakia, voters went to the polls on Sunday to elect the country’s first female president, Zuzana Caputova. The Associated Press reported that Caputova narrowly defeated Maros Sefcovic, a vice president of the European Commission, to become the country’s fifth president since Slovakia gained independence from Czechoslovakia in 1993.

Caputova, who is 45 years old, is known for her activism and legal battles against corrupt politicians. She leads the progressive party Progressive Slovakia and the liberal party Spolu (Together). Her election is seen as a victory for the pro-European Union forces and a blow to the ruling Smer-SD party, which has recently been embroiled in corruption scandals.

Sefcovic, who is 59 years old, is a former diplomat and meteorologist. He has served as Slovakia’s ambassador to the United States and Germany, as well as a member of the European Commission and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Polling stations closed at 9:00 PM GMT (5:00 PM EDT), and the results will be announced on Monday. If no candidate receives a majority of the votes, the top two contenders will proceed to a second round of voting, which will take place on April 6.
