“Zvartnots Airport in Armenia Resumes International Flights with New Safety Measures”

In the field of international transfers in Armenia, flights between Yerevan and Kapal are still suspended due to the ongoing global pandemic. Currently, the “Zvartnots” airport is only operating international flights, which depart and arrive from other countries.

The head of the airport, Karen Vardanyan, has reported that the first flight of the Yerevan-Kapal-Yerevan route took place on April 26th, which was a charter flight. Starting from August 21st, regular international transfers have been resumed, which are performed twice a week on Saturdays and Fridays.

In total, 35 international flights have been performed in the past 7 months. Sometimes, weather conditions prevent the safe operation of flights, and during such situations, flights are canceled. However, similar situations also occur in major international airports. Safety and security of passengers and the airport staff is paramount.

According to Karen Vardanyan, in order to ensure the safety of the flights and reduce the number of cancellations, the Government of Armenia is implementing measures to invest in, procure, and install appropriate equipment. Additionally, the height of the main cloud cover has already been installed. In the future, it is planned to install VOR/DME equipment, which will allow pilots to receive more accurate information and significantly reduce the number of flight cancellations.

The construction of the airport, including the construction of runways and other infrastructure, has cost 2.5 billion AMD. Furthermore, for the construction of the main building of the “Zvartnots” airport, financing of more than 10 billion AMD has been provided by the Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine. The airport, which is the only airport in the southern region of Armenia, is designed and built to serve international flights and long distances.

According to Karen Vardanyan, the infrastructure of the airport is capable of fully supporting the operation of international flights. There are certain technical and administrative issues that still need to be resolved by the state in order to make the airport fully operational.

The Armenian company “Armenpress” has also reported that the “Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine” has also been involved in financing the expenses for the maintenance and operation of the airport. In 2023, this organization has allocated over 150 million AMD for this purpose. Currently, the airport is facing some challenges, and additional investments are needed to overcome them.

The company “Armenpress” has also reported that the “Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine” has been involved in financing the expenses for the maintenance and operation of the airport, as well as funding the expenses of the “Novey” company, which operates the flights. In 2023, this organization has allocated over 505 million AMD for this purpose.
