“Russian Airstrikes Devastate Ukraine’s Largest Hydroelectric Power Plant, Crippling Energy Supply”

The largest hydroelectric power plant in Ukraine, located in the city of Zaporozhye, sustained severe damage due to Russian airstrikes on the night of March 22. As a result, both units of the Dnipro hydroelectric power plant are currently non-functional. According to Igor Sirota, the head of Ukrhydroenergo, the Ukrainian company responsible for the facility, two turbines were hit. One turbine crashed onto the dam, causing flooding in the power plant, while the other turbine is in critical condition and not operating.

In addition to the turbine damage, the transformers and technology at the power plant were also impacted. Sirota mentioned that a thorough evaluation of the incident will be conducted to determine the extent of the damage and the plant’s future operational capabilities. There are concerns about whether the hydroelectric power plant will be able to function under restricted conditions or within a specific timeframe.

To address the damage, electricians are currently working to restore the equipment and allow for the proper flow of water, as the dam can no longer contain it. Despite the damage, Ukrhydroenergo assured that there is no immediate risk of flooding.
