“UK Prime Minister vows to provide support for Armenian refugees and promote peace in the South Caucasus”

In the Palace of Westminster in the British Parliament, a discussion was held on the topic of “International support for Armenian refugees from Karabakh” initiated by the Armenian community. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Leo Docherty, was questioned about what London can do to support the displaced people, their safe return, the resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, ensuring the safe return of Armenian prisoners of war, and promoting the peace process between the two countries.

The Prime Minister stated that the UK government is committed to assisting Armenia and will continue to work with international organizations and the government of Yerevan to strengthen their capabilities to evaluate and monitor initiatives. He also mentioned that the government is ready to provide support to Azerbaijan by facilitating the integration of Armenians who want to return to the country.

“Our role is to bring stability and reach a peaceful resolution between these two countries. We have witnessed in Russia and the wider region that none of this is easy. The political efforts have shown that Russia is not an effective and impartial mediator,” said the Prime Minister.

Docherty also mentioned that in July, the United Kingdom hosted a meeting of the European Parliament’s working group on European political and economic integration. According to the Prime Minister, this is a good opportunity for the leaders of the countries of the South Caucasus to convene with other European leaders to discuss the restoration of peace.

He concluded by stating that the United Kingdom is determined to continue providing humanitarian assistance and offering educational cooperation to help restore peace in the region. Docherty expressed hope that there will be real support for the restoration of peace in the South Caucasus.

It is worth mentioning that Docherty expressed his appreciation for the ceasefire agreement reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan in December, which resulted in the release of 34 prisoners of war.

In conclusion, he assured that the United Kingdom is committed to providing concrete, institutional, and financial support to facilitate peace and will take consistent steps to promote educational cooperation. Docherty expressed hope for cultural and economic support for the restoration of peace in the South Caucasus.
