European Countries Call for Suspension of Russian and Belarusian Bread Flour Imports, Citing Economic and Political Concerns

Five European countries, including Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia, and Estonia, have requested a suspension of the import of Russian and Belarusian bread flour, according to the European Union (EU). This request was made in a document signed by the mayors of the respective municipalities, as reported by the DPA agency.

It is worth noting that Russia, in response to the EU’s suspension of bread flour imports, also provides financial support for military operations in Ukraine. The five countries are urging the EU to consider the possibility of restricting imports from Russia in order to establish new norms for imports from the Russian Federation within the European Union. They believe that the consequences of such import restrictions should be thoroughly analyzed.

The DPA, citing Eurostat data, reveals that EU countries have significantly increased their imports of bread flour from Russia in recent years. The value of imports has risen from 120 million euros in 2020 to 290 million euros in 2021. Furthermore, imports are projected to reach 325 million euros in 2022 and 440 million euros in 2023.
