Education Elections

“Controversy Surrounds YSU Faculty Election for Dean: Current Head Endorsed despite Not Being Nominated”

The election for the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at YSU took place on April 3, according to the “Hraparak” newspaper. The candidates for the position have been presented. Gegik Ghazinyan, who has been heading the faculty since 1996, was not nominated this time but has received the endorsement of the faculty’s committee chairman, Haroutyun Khachikyan. Khachikyan has been a resident of the same building since 1994. Gevorg Petrosyan, who has been expelled from YSU but reinstated through the judicial process, is the other candidate.

Rumors are circulating about potential actions that may be taken if Ghazinyan is nominated, including boycotting the election. There is also talk of marking the “YES” sign for the “December 7” sign. When asked to comment on not being nominated, Ghazinyan stated, “After 28 years of work, I don’t believe I have exceeded my boundaries. However, I do believe we should provide others with an opportunity. There are at least 2-3 individuals in our faculty, like Khachikyan, who are willing to step forward and have the support of the faculty’s committee member. We should all work together to ensure that the faculty not only experiences a change in leadership but also improves as a whole.”

Ghazinyan did not anticipate such a strong reaction to the general announcement. “One person cannot be appointed from an outside source… This belief has been established within our faculty. About 100 people were present at the December meeting, and we did not receive any objections. The faculty assesses its accomplishments, and if YSU holds a different standpoint, it will ultimately prevail.”

A minimum of 41 votes are required to elect the December candidate.
