Armenian Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Meet with Head of EU Delegation in Strasbourg: Focus on Internal Affairs Reforms and Cooperation

The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, and the Minister of Justice, Karen Karapetyan, met with Ambassador Bern Berg, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Armenia, in Strasbourg on March 21. They were joined by Arman Khachatryan, the representative of the President of Armenia in the European Court of Human Rights. The meeting focused on various topics, such as the establishment of an Internal Affairs system, legal reforms, migration and civil society, military reforms, visa liberalization, and cooperation between the European Union and Armenia. Pashinyan commended the effective collaboration with international partners in implementing wide-scale reforms in the Internal Affairs sector to protect human rights, improve legal frameworks, and prevent serious crimes. Ambassador Berg praised the efforts of the Armenian government and authorities in carrying out the reforms, emphasizing the importance of including professionals in human rights, legal standards, and combating domestic violence. The parties also discussed the progress of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Armenia and the activities of the Media Committee, particularly in relation to freedom of speech in Armenia. They acknowledged the advancements in programs aimed at protecting rights and establishing the rule of law through the “Armenia’s Smart Support Program” and celebrated successes in media freedom. As a result of the meeting, they agreed to continue and expand their fruitful cooperation.
