“European Parliament Holds Hearing on Plight of Armenian Soldiers in Artsakh: Calls for Peaceful Resolution and Release of Detainees”

In the European Parliament, a hearing was held to address the issue of Armenian soldiers stationed in Artsakh. The hearing was organized by the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Security and Defense, chaired by Andrzej Kołodziejski, who provided an update on the situation in Armenia. Representatives from the Armenian Ministry of Defense, Tigran Balayan, Armenia’s ambassador to Belgium, and members of the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR) were also present. During the hearing, Andrey Kovachev, the rapporteur of the European Parliament, emphasized the need for diplomatic resolution and the unconditional release of soldiers and detainees. The Belgian prosecutor, Tigran Balayan, stated that the Armenian soldiers are victims rather than perpetrators, and Armenia is willing to adhere to international humanitarian law by returning prisoners of war. Eghishe Kirakosyan, the representative of Armenia in the International Parliamentary Assembly on Human Rights, highlighted the importance of international efforts to facilitate the return of Armenian soldiers. Arif Yunus, the director of the Center for Liberty, expressed that the soldiers were forced to fight by the military regime of Azerbaijan. Simon Papuashvili, director of IPHR, also condemned the physical and psychological abuse inflicted upon Armenian prisoners of war by the Azerbaijani authorities. At the conclusion of the hearing, Arman Yeghoyan, president of the Armenian National Interests Committee, thanked Andrey Kovachev for organizing the session and stressed the need for continued discussions to address the situation.
