“Breaking Stereotypes: Kapitan Mari Makyan Defies Expectations and Earns Respect as Female Commander in Armenian Armed Forces”

Kapitan Mari Makyan has been serving in the Armenian Armed Forces for several years, preparing special combat orders for infantry commanders that should be implemented in the battlefield.

“After my service, I realized that I should become a commander, and with that intention, I started working. I know what keeping discipline means, how demanding our military service is,” Mari said.

Difficulties could not be avoided, as when you enter the military at the age of 18 and have to command soldiers who are almost your age. They themselves don’t understand the difference between a male and a female commander, how can a female soldier command us? But over time, these stereotypes were shattered and they started accepting me as a commander. “You have to think like soldiers,” Mari says.
