“Armenia Blanketed in Snow as Winter Storm Hits the Country”

Gagik Surenian, director of the National Hydrographic and Monitoring Center of the RA SRC, recently shared a photo on his Facebook page showing 40cm of snow on Mt. Jmbark in March.

Starting from 9:00 am on March 20, the Gorayk motorway has been closed with restricted transportation, according to the “Highway Maintenance” Foundation. The Ttujur-Naour motorway is also completely closed for all types of transportation.

In addition, the Joughour-Nadour motorway is closed but with difficult transportation. Snowfall has been reported in the provinces of Abovian, Hrazdan, Sevan, Jambark, Gavar, Martuni, Masis, Artashat, Eghenadzor, Vayk, Jermuk, Sisian, Goris, Kapan, Meghri, Talin, Ani, Artik, Akhuryan, Ashotsk, Aparan, Aragatsi, Vanadzor, Stephnavan, and Tashir.

The Vardenyats Pass is currently closed for transportation, but with restricted access for other types of transportation. However, all highways of national and republican significance remain open as highway maintenance companies work tirelessly on cleaning and snow removal operations.

The “Hydrographic and Monitoring Center” Institute has informed us that the current weather situation will persist throughout the country until March 20, after which gradual improvement is expected. However, on March 21, a new weather cycle will approach from the Mediterranean Sea, resulting in significant snowfall in many regions. Higher areas, above 1500m, will experience snow, while lower areas will receive rainfall.
