Controversial Construction by Armenian Apostolic Church Sparks Outrage and Disrupts Scientific Institute’s Operations

Construction of a residential complex has begun in a location where a previous reservoir, belonging to the Institute of Geological Chemistry, was situated. The Holy See of the Armenian Apostolic Church has undertaken this project, which has been underway for ten days. Employees of the Institute assert that the government has granted permission to build on a territory of historical and cultural significance that is listed as a national monument in Yerevan. The reservoir in question had played a vital role in addressing ecological and environmental concerns, according to Sahak Gasparian, the director of the Institute.

The ongoing construction has disrupted operations at the Institute. Limited working hours have been imposed on scientific research due to the construction activities, hindering progress on various construction projects and further research. The director, Gasparian, highlights the congestion caused by construction, emphasizing that the Institute not only conducts scientific work but also produces important medicinal and therapeutic products. Currently, the construction continues unhindered, with two buildings, one 18 floors and the other 7 floors high, planned for completion as per the agreement with the construction company.
